Winfred (Blackie) Oscar Burton, 92, of Malvern, AR, passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2023. Blackie was born in Tichnor, Arkansas in Arkansas County, to Rodner Paschal and Callie Mae Burton in 1930. He was a member of the Hot Springs Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Blackie grew up in the Central community, south of Malvern, and graduated from Central High School in 1949. He married Melva Sue Burris in August of 1949. He worked for the Arkansas Forestry Commission and Acme Brick Company before starting a job at the International Paper Company in Pine Bluff where he worked for 31 years, retiring in 1990. Blackie was an avid fisherman, hunter, and gardener. He had many fishing buddies and often shared his catch with family and friends. He tended a garden wherever he lived and shared the produce. Blackie loved his family and friends very much, traveling with Sue all over the United States to visit them.
Blackie is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, R.B. Burton, Eugene Burton, J.W. Burton, and Harold Burton; and sisters, Inez Stuckey, and Melba Jean Reid.
He is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Sue; his four children, Susan Swenson, Patricia (Richard) Hall, Stephen (Rebecca) Burton, Larry (Pamela) Burton; and his eight grandchildren, Bethany Singletary, Tiffany Taylor, Nathan Hall, Aaron Hall, Kevin Burton, Julie Bowes, Danielle Burton, and Jeremy Burton. They were blessed with 16 great-grandchildren to whom he loved to give “crunches” (hugs). He is also survived by two brothers, Charlie Burton, and Frank (Linda) Burton, sister-in-law Margie Burton, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at the Atkinson Funeral Home Chapel in Malvern, Arkansas on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, from 6:00–8:00 pm. The funeral will be held at the Atkinson Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, January 19, 2023, at 11:00 am followed by a graveside service. Interment will be at the Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in the Central community. Online condolences can be made at www.atkinsonfuneralhome.net
